Box Office Report: “Tenet” Drops in Lackluster Second Weekend
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
Despite crossing $200 million at the international box office, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” is struggling to draw audiences across the U.S. In its second weekend, the thriller earned just $6.7 million, a 29% drop compared to its opening weekend. Warner Bros. initially said the film earned $20 million in its opening weekend, but upon later review, that total also included sppecial preview screenings earlier in the week before its release.
“Tenet” represents the first major wide release since the pandemic began in March.
Though the film isn’t a flop, in COVID-19 terms, “Tenet” hasn’t been the boom to cinema-going studios and theater-owners have been hoping for. It’s also worth noting, theaters in major markets like New York and Los Angeles have yet to reopen.
This weekend, “Tenet” was playing in 2,910 locations.
Sony released “The Broken Hearts Gallery” this weekend, making it the only notable new wide release. THe romantic comedy earned $1.125 million from 2,204 theaters.
